Getting started with dVellum

What dVellum does, how to open your company's workspace, and its email, branding and language settings.

Updated October 17, 2026 View as Markdown

dVellum sends documents for electronic signature. Signers need no account: they get a personal link by email, agree to sign electronically, fill in their fields and sign. When everyone has signed, dVellum seals the PDF with a digital seal and a trusted timestamp and adds a certificate of completion with the full history.

You can send documents from your browser, from EspoCRM, or from your own software through the API.

Your workspace

Each S+M company has its own dVellum workspace: its documents, templates, contacts, settings and API keys are kept apart from everyone else's.

  1. Go to dvellum.sapiensandmachines.com/app and choose Sign in with S+M. It's the same account as my.sapiensandmachines.com.
  2. Pick your company and create its workspace (name and signer language).
  3. Choose a plan. The Basic plan is free and needs no card. Owners and billing contacts of the company can choose or change it; billing lives in your S+M account.
  4. Invite the people who work with you from your S+M account. In the workspace each person has a role: Owner, Admin (settings, API keys, webhooks, people), Sender (sends and follows documents) or Viewer (sees and downloads them).

Email sending

dVellum sends the invitations, reminders and signed copies for you: they come from notify@dvellum.sapiensandmachines.com as "Your company via dVellum", and when a signer replies, the reply goes to the person who sent the document. For documents sent by your CRM or the API, set the address that gets replies in Settings → Workspace → Email.

Tip

Want invitations to come from your own address, for example contracts@example.com? S+M can set your workspace to send through your own email server (SMTP). Ask us; setting this up yourself in Settings is on the way.

Branding, language and signing options

In Settings → Workspace:

  • Logo: PNG (a transparent background works best) or JPG, up to 2 MB, shown in emails and on the signing pages. You can hide the workspace name next to the logo if the logo already includes it.
  • Language for signers: English or Spanish, for the signing pages and every email signers receive. Each document, and each signer, can still use another language.
  • Signing options: how many days signers have, automatic reminders, and whether signers must confirm a code sent to their email before they open a document.
